Cafes

Issue 12: December 2, 2004 - February 10, 2005

Hot Chocolate: Not Every One’s a Winner
If your idea of “hot chocolate” is a relatively thin, milky cocoa drink, you’ll be in for a shock if you ever order it in a Moscow cafe. What you’ll probably get instead is something more like pure melted chocolate. It’s thick and rich, and has a tendency to solidify if it’s not kept moving, which is why many cafes keep it swirling around in a cement mixer-like vat. Undrinkable as this hot chocolate might seem to cocoa fans, it’s actually a different drink — and the recipe really does call for chocolate bars to be melted into cream.

Maki Cafe
This new, inexpensive cafe and bar on the former site of Mos-Bombay offers an international menu, including a small selection of maki rolls.

Issue 11: November 4 - December 2, 2004

Morning Coffee — Not
Market research agency Step by Step recently announced the results of its research into Moscow’s coffeehouse-going population.

Issue 10: October 7 - November 4, 2004

Art Bazar
Ever been to a restaurant and thought its furniture would look great in your living room? If you find yourself casting an acquisitive eye on the colorful Middle Eastern-style furniture and decorations at the newly opened Art Bazar, just reach into your wallet and you can take the desired item home with you.

Esterhazy
A new Esterhazy cafe has opened right next to the Taganka Theater, with live music, a second floor for quick eats, and of course, the popular Esterhazy cakes.

Issue 9: September 9 - October 7, 2004

Milkshake Shakedown
While dessert menus these days abound with all-manner of cold concoctions, from frappuccinos to exotic tropical drinks, there are few that can rival the good old milkshake as an all-purpose refresher.

Cafes
If you seek to attain Zen, don’t be surprised if you end up in Montana. The city’s popular Zen Coffee cafes are in the process of turning into Montana Coffee cafes, following Montana’s purchase of its competitor last month.

Issue 8: July 8 - September 9, 2004

Gostinaya
Tucked away in a lane off a busy highway is Gostinaya’s new summer veranda, a bright and imaginative annex to the now well-established cafe.

Issue 7: June 10 - July 8, 2004

Detsky Mir Cafe
The Detsky Mir children’s store on Lubyanskaya Ploshchad has a well-kept secret other than its real ice-cream milkshakes served year-round.

Issue 5: April 8 - May 13, 2004

Sip & Click At Fotokafe
The FotoKafe at FotoTsentr.ru's southwest location purports to be the world's first photography cafe. Sounds far-fetched? Maybe, but I have to admit that after a recent visit I was convinced that this variant of cafe-cum-photo lab could truly be one of a kind.
