While the history of sumo wrestling in Japan is over 1,000 years old, in Russia the sport has been making waves for considerably less time. Prior to 1992, when the International Sumo Federation was formed and with it the Sumo Federation of Russia, sumo was a subsection of the Judo Federation of Russia. With the advent of international amateur competition, Russia’s sumo wrestlers started winning tournaments — even at world championship level. A major breakthrough for Russian sumo wrestling came in 2000 when Ayas Mongush of Tuva became world champion in the middleweight category.
