Malenkaya Yaponiya: Novikov strikes again
In a move that could be taken as a sign that sushi is here to stay, top restaurateur Arkady Novikov has opened a new Japanese restaurant, Malenkaya Yaponiya (Little Japan). With an emphasis on low prices, high quality and good service, it is intended to be the first in a chain of budget Japanese eateries. There are plans to open 10 more Malenkaya Yaponiyas in 2005.

Looking for classical Russian cuisine in an opulent banya? A new restaurant called Sanduny opened in late November at Sandunovskiye Bani, so now you can combine fine dining with bathing.

Elegantly housed in an old mansion, the new Italian restaurant Lyustra (Chandelier) is lavishly decorated in an early 20th-century theme, for a stylish yet cozy effect. Management promises democratic prices, cigars and a large wine list; banquets and corporate parties welcome.

After nine months of anticipation, it has finally happened: Pancho Villa has reopened. This popular Mexican restaurant, which closed to make way for the Hard Rock Cafe on Ulitsa Arbat, reopened in November near Oktyabrskaya metro station.

Syrnaya Dyrka: lots of cheese
Cheese-lovers now have another cheesy place to go, with the opening of Frantsuzskaya Syrnaya Dyrka (French Cheese Hole), created by the people behind the Swiss Syrnaya Dyrka on Pokrovsky Bulvar. Expect all sorts of cheese in assorted guises.

Keep an eye on Sun Set’s former premises across the road from Galereya: A new Mediterranean fish and seafood restaurant called La Mare is due to open imminently. The restaurant’s name is taken from one of the owner-partners — a French fish and seafood supply company that is to be a supplier for the restaurant. La Mare is to operate as a fish market as well, with fish to cook at home; as an extra service, the staff is to clean the fish and prepare it according to the buyer’s individual needs. A wine shop is also planned. Management said the chef is French, the cuisine will be mostly French with some Spanish and Italian choices, and the average bill is likely to be about $75-$100 per person.

The team behind Keks is planning to open a new 24-hour bar in late December, characterized by Chinese food, Bruce Lee portraits and Hong Kong trash. Like Keks, the new bar is to be housed on part of the Krasnaya Roza textile factory’s premises.

Watch out for the opening of a second Correa’s restaurant in mid-December. American expat chef Isaac Correa — whom astute readers may have spotted starring in Ren-TV’s series “Kholostyaki” (Bachelors) — said his new restaurant is bigger than the first Correa’s, with more seating, but the popular international menu will be the same.
