Refree: 35mm, Dec. 10
By Sergey Chernov
Issue 12
December 2, 2004 - February 10, 2005

Refree: Folk-Pop
The Barcelona-based jazzy folk-pop band Refree returns to Russia as a quartet, with a set that its frontman and songwriter Raul Fernandez said he hopes will be “more energetic” and better than its February gig here as a trio. The band, whose album of last year, “Nones,” was named Spain’s Album of the Year by the music magazine “Rock de Lux,” has been busy touring Spain and France and appeared at a major Spanish film festival, where Fernandez directed a special music program of Spanish film soundtracks. In Moscow, Refree is to perform some of Fernandez’s new songs, composed for the band’s next album, which it plans to start recording in January.

“I think it’s going to be a little bit different than ‘Nones,’” said Fernandez, who writes songs both in Spanish and Catalan.

“Maybe crazier and more pop, with three or four different melodies in one song, more ‘60s and more based on the voice.”
